Say cheese in The Netherlands !!!

The Netherlands is very famous for its cheese and has so many different varieties. Some of the most famous ones are Gouda cheese, Edam cheese (with the the red coating) and Maasdam cheese.

Actually there are even six different types of Gouda cheese. The difference is the age, with the youngest cheese being 4 weeks old and the oldest one 18 months or even older. The youngest one, called “jonge kaas”, is soft and mild, are therefore very popular. But if you like a stronger cheese flavour, you should definitely try “extra belegen” or “oude kaas”.

By the way, did you know that the oldest cheese in the world is a Gouda cheese produced in 1184?

You will find cheese everywhere in the Netherlands and it is used in so many different dishes. A cheese sandwich is probably the most eaten cheese dish, but there are also many snacks with cheese, for example the “kaassouffle” or “kaasstengels”.

And if you want to see one of the famous cheese markets (where cheese was traded in the past), visit for example the world famous cheese markets of Gouda, Edam or Alkmaar. And if you want to know how cheese is made, you visit the Amsterdam cheese museum, the Alkmaar cheese museum, or the Cheese Factory in Volendam.

So, when you visit the Netherlands, try some different cheeses, eat cheese like the locals do, and enjoy the real Dutch cheese experience! And if you can’t get enough of it during your trip, the good thing is that at most supermarkets, wet markets and tourist shops, you can ask for vacuum packaged cheese, which you can bring to Indonesia (or any other country) by airplane.
