The Eiffel Tower, or Tour Eiffel in French, is a must go when you visit Paris.
Visiting or just seeing the Eiffel Tower is fun, but it’s even more fun when you know that…
- …The Eiffel Tower was built in just a bit more than 2 years, from 1887 to 1889
- …Since its opening, already 250 million people went up (and the really adventurous ones even take the stairs)
- …The Eiffel Tower can grow up to 15 cm when the weather is hot.
- …The Eiffel Tower has not always had the same colour. It has already been repainted 18 times and had various colours: red brown, yellow ochre, and chestnut brown.
- …The Eiffel Tower was build by the famous engineer Gustave Eiffel (though it was actually designed by two other engineers named Maurice Kochlin and Emile Nouguier). Mr. Eiffel had his own apartment inside the Eiffel Tower on the top floor (and you can visit it!)
- …The Eiffel Tower is the most valuable monument in Europe worth EUR 435 billion, while the cost of building it was “just” about EUR 30 million.
- And probably the most unique fact is that a woman married the Eiffel Tower in 2008 and changed her name to Erika La Tour Eiffel.
And another facts that our team at EropaHoliday knows…
About 7 million people a year enjoy the view from the 324 meters high Eiffel Tower, and even more people just enjoy the view of the Eiffel Tower from the ground. And of course a selfie with the Eiffel Tower in the background is a must have for your instagram 🙂
Besides fun facts, here are some things that are good to know when you visit the Eiffel Tower:
- The Eiffel Tower lights up from sunset to 1AM (2AM during summer). It’s using 20,000 light bulbs! No wonder Paris is called the City of Lights 🙂
- Every hour in the evening, the Eiffel Tower sparkles for 5 minutes.
- There are plenty of good photo spots. Some of the best are: at the top at day and night, from the elevator when you go up (elevator is made of glass) and at the base. Another famous photo spot on the ground is at Champs-de-Mars, the green area within walking distance from the Eiffel Tower.
When you go up, there are three floors to visit:
- The first floor is 57 meters above the ground and has a glass floor.
- The second floor has a Michelin starred restaurant, called Jules Vernes. It also has a shopping and food area, including a nice and colourful macaroon bar.
- The top floor is 276 meters above ground. There is an open-air and indoor subfloor. There is a champagne bar and you can also have a look at Gustave Eiffel’s office (fully restored in its original condition).
