Experiencing the traditional Dutch Waterland village of Volendam

There are three traditional Dutch villages in the Waterland area that are really worth a visit if you want to see the real traditional Dutch life: Edam, Marken and Volendam.
Edam is famous for its cheese, and Marken for its fisheries. Volendam is also a fisherman village and it has lots of things to offer for tourists.
And the good thing is: Volendam is only 30 minutes driving from Amsterdam!
First of all, the famous Volendam promenade is full of souvenir shops and eateries with real Dutch food, and you can dress up in traditional Volendam outfit and get a professional photoshoot.
There is also a cheese museum, where you can see how the famous Dutch cheese is made. If you can’t get enough of the Dutch experience, you can walk around for free or get a tour at the wooden shoes (“klompen”) museum, which has a big variety of decorated traditional and modern wooden shoes.

If you are a foodie, you should definitely eat some local (fish) dishes in Volendam. “Kibbeling” and “lekkerbek” are very popular fried fish snacks. And if you like herring or eel, Volendam is the perfect place to get some. Don’t worry if you don’t like fish: just enjoy some real Dutch “friet” (fries) or “soft ice” (milky ice cream).

Last but not least, the view from the Volendam promenade is really beautiful, as the little harbour has some very nice authentic (and modern) boats. There are also lots of cute and unique old houses in Volendam.
All of this makes Volendam especially a really good place for anyone who likes to take lots of awesome travel pictures to show to their friends.
